Special Time With Your Child
"Every kid should have their parent as their first soccer coach," is the important advice offered by soccer dad Tim Vom Steeg, who also happens to be the Head Men's Soccer Coach of UC Santa Barbara (two-time NCAA Division I Soccer Coach of the Year and 2006 National Champion.) But it's his role as a dad who coached his own children in AYSO, not his experience as a college coach, that he points to as his qualifications.
Volunteering to coach your child in AYSO is a family experience. It's a time in your child's life you'll want to share. AYSO's National Coaching Program was created to help every parent - mom and dad, soccer veteran and soccer novice -- enjoy this one-of-a-kind experience with their child.
Based on innovative age-appropriate training, an AYSO parent coach learns how to create a fun introductory soccer experience for five-year-olds, add in more techniques for the increasing motor skills of six and seven-year-olds, then progress through the age groups (U-10, U-12, Intermediate, and Advanced), adding appropriate technique and skill training at each age level.
Coaching your son or daughter is a unique opportunity to spend time with them and help with the life lessons that every parent values. These are memories, for both you and your child that will last forever.
AYSO now also offers CATZCoaching, step-by-step video instruction to run soccer practices the AYSO way. They help every coach prepare simple but effective practices, from the opening ice breaker to fun activities, skills training and small sided games. The 8-12 minute videos don't just tell you what to do - they SHOW you. And there's one for every practice for the whole season.
Whether you're a champion college coach or a mom that's only seen soccer on TV, you'll be required in AYSO to take each age appropriate training course in order starting at U-6. Available as in-person sessions in your community or in a handy free online format, each course builds on the knowledge and techniques of the preceding course. They're fast, friendly and very low cost.
Playing soccer or being a fan doesn't teach you how to help six-year-olds learn soccer. Or how to give effective, positive feedback to a smart aleck 12-year-old. Or teach the right technique to a 16-year-old. AYSO's National Coaching Program was developed to help the veteran soccer playing mom or dad as well as the novice becomes an effective youth soccer coach. So when you register your child for AYSO this season, volunteer to coach their team. You'll be glad you did.
