George Kuntz


AYSO's Player Development Technical Advisor



George KuntzGeorge Kuntz - long-time head coach of the University of California, Irvine (UC Irvine) men's soccer program - is AYSO's Player Development Technical Advisor. George possesses a wealth of soccer knowledge and extensive experience from coaching U-6 to the highest levels of the sport.

In his position with AYSO, Kuntz provides technical advice, direction and support to the National Coaching Advisory Commission, develops beneficial relationships with other soccer organizations on behalf of AYSO, provides topics, articles and interviews for AYSO publications and more.

Kuntz knows AYSO well. He regularly takes part in AYSO events and clinics, and has been an AYSO Super Camp clinician for over 15 years. He also works closely with many AYSO Regions around UC Irvine in both Area 11L and Area 11Q speaking at Region meetings, Leadership Seminars for captains of AYSO Plus teams and more. He proudly coached his son for three years in AYSO's Aliso Viejo Region, while his daughter played in the Laguna Niguel AYSO U-5 program last year. He is currently entering into his 17th season as a head coach of men's soccer for UC Irvine, has been a NCAA Division I head coach for 22 years and holds a US Soccer "A" license, National Youth License and the National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA) Advanced National Diploma.

Kuntz began his college coaching career in 1988 at California Lutheran University, later becoming the first head coach for women's soccer at Pepperdine University. There he recorded a remarkable 23-11-2 record in the first two seasons of the program's existence, making him one of the pioneers for collegiate women's soccer in the United States - he is a strong believer in the AYSO philosophy that Everyone Plays®!

During his tenure as a college Head Coach, Kuntz has coached over 100 players that have been named all - conference, 10 players that have been drafted or signed by Major League Soccer and close to 120 that have been honored as scholar athletes. His has coached three Big West Champion teams for UCI.

His involvement with a wide variety of soccer organizations around the country makes Kuntz a powerful influence on soccer in the United States. He was a founding member of the Latino Soccer Coaches Association of America, member of the NSCAA and a member of the US Soccer Coaches Association. During the1994 World Cup he worked for FIFA as a Technical Assistant.

Kuntz has spent a large part of his coaching career studying the development of the youth soccer player and was nationally recognized as the one of the longest serving United States Youth Soccer Association (USYSA) Directors of Coaching for CalSouth and the Hawaii Youth Soccer Association and was the catalyst for mandatory licensing by USYSA of youth soccer coaches in the U.S. During his collegiate years, Kuntz played at Westmont College, San Diego Mesa College, and Scottsdale College, and was later drafted by the Phoenix Fire of the American Professional Soccer League. Kuntz's father, Dr. Daniel Kuntz, introduced George to the sport and is also very active in the soccer community - he once played for the Chivas de Guadalajara youth team and Atlante Mexican Primera Division Champions and later founded the Mesa Soccer Club.

Kuntz and his wife Susan have two children, a 9-year-old son Jordan and a 4-year-old daughter Sevilla.
