This Sunday, AYSO Executive Members elected a new National President Mark Stewart, and three new members of the National Board of Directors (NBOD): Fred Freeman, Jeff McClure and Donna Nelson.
For all three of your new NBOD members, this is the first time serving on the National Board. We put together short bios of each to help acquaint you with them, their AYSO backgrounds and overall experience.
Fred Freeman: Fred has been involved in AYSO for 15 years and has served as a coach, Regional Commissioner, Assistant Area Director and Section Director for Section 11. During his tenure as SD, Section 11 earned the Section of the Year honor in 2013, as well as received 100 percent Regional Assessment Program and Area Assessment Program participation.
When asked what he would do to help Regions attract new players, Fred responded: “By creating opportunities beyond our core programs, AYSO will build in all segments of our organization. Being the best of the best, will stem attrition and draw athletes to AYSO.”
Currently, Fred lives in Los Alamitos, Calif.
Jeff McClure: Jeff got his start in AYSO when his oldest son’s U-6 team needed a coach in 1998. Since then, Jeff has held a variety of positions, including Regional Commissioner, Advanced Referee, Vice-Chair of the Legal Commission and Chairperson of the Ethics Task Force. Jeff’s professional background as a practicing attorney has uniquely prepared him for his new role on the NBOD.
“During my time on the Legal Commission, I have helped resolve a number of potential legal issues for different levels of the organization.”
Jeff currently resides in Martinez, Calif.
Donna Nelson: AYSO has been an integral part of Donna Nelson’s family for over 30 years. She has served in every Executive Member position, including her most recent position as Section Director for Section 10. Donna has also served a variety of national programs, including the National Management Advisory Commission, the Hall of Fame Commission and the NAGM Task Force.
“As a member of your National Board of Directors, I want to help provide the latitude, creativity, recognition and support to help you be successful,” shared Donna.
Donna lives in Bakersfield, Calif., with husband Dan.
