AYSO's highest priority is creating a safe and nurturing environment where kids can play and have fun. We take seriously the issue of concussion awareness and are proud to have played a leading role in developing policies and programs to address this area of concern since 2009.
AYSO policy requires all volunteers to undergo Safe Haven Training, one of the first child safety programs in the nation for youth sports. We also provide our volunteers training on concussion awareness and appropriate precautionary steps that can be taken to minimize the risk of injury.
AYSO policy also specifically requires that any player who is believed to be exhibiting signs or symptoms of a concussion immediately be removed from play for the remainder of the day and advises that medical attention be sought by parents.
We have partnered with the Center for Disease Control to not only create effective policies on this matter but also raise awareness among parents and players about the risks of concussions. We know that awareness is one of the strongest protective steps that can be taken. As the state of science around concussions evolves, so too do our efforts to ensure a safe environment for all kids.
