AYSO Region 1174 in Hazel Green, Ala., is not only busy keeping up with their spring season, they’re also making a difference internationally to help girls play soccer.
This small Region of 220-250 players has teamed up with the African Children's Educational Initiative Inc. (ACEII) in Huntsville, Ala. This organization provides services to help schools in Africa purchase books, remodel buildings, help the sick and teaches children how to read.
For about a year, Region 1174 has been working with ACEII, and has donated soccer uniforms and equipment. Last year, the Region provided equipment for a league of four teams - about 48 players.
“When we were first approached about helping the organization, we began collecting gently used cleats and also donated some unused jerseys that we had in storage,” said Regional Commissioner Nathan Stewart. “This year we have set larger goals for ourselves and can use help from anyone who can donate.”
Region 1174 has set-up a page on their website that shows a list of items they are looking to donate to ACEII. With the help of outside donations, Region 1174 is looking to help almost 30 additional girls play soccer this year. Check out the list of needed items here.
Nathan hopes to have all supplies by Aug. 1, so the girls can have equipment in time for their upcoming season.
“When we saw the smiling faces of the girls in Uganda we became motivated to provide the same kind of environment for them that we provide for our players in AYSO,” shared Nathan.
Awesome job, Region 1174! If you would like to make a donation, please contact RC Nathan Stewart for details. More info on ACEII can be found here.
