2 Famous AYSO Fans

#SoccerFEST14 is two days away! We’re counting down the days here on, and today we’re featuring two famous AYSO fans.

1.    Jimmy Conrad: AYSO Kiddo to Soccer Legend

Most people know Jimmy as a world-renowned soccer star, but what a lot of people don’t know is that he got his start in soccer as an AYSO player in Region 98 in Temple City, Calif. He thanks his AYSO Region for giving him a love of the game.

Jimmy had a great soccer career, with plenty of achievements including four-time MLS Best XI, the 2005 MLS Defender of the Year and was the driving force behind taking his team to the 2006 FIFA World Cup. In his 13 years of professional soccer, he has played with the San Jose Earthquakes, Kansas City Wizards and Chivas USA.

“I will forever be in debt to [AYSO] Coach Baisley, Coach Asao, Coach Evans and Coach Stacey for laying the groundwork for my success both on and off the field,” said Jimmy.

2.    Brandi Chastain: World Cup Champ to Soccer Mom

AYSO Hall of Famer Brandi Chastain is as decorated as they come in soccer.  Her contributions to youth soccer and the sport as a whole are admirable.

She attended UC Berkeley as a freshmen and was awarded Soccer America’s Freshmen Player of the Year in 1986. In 1991 while playing for Team USA, Brandi made a splash against Team Mexico in a qualifier, scoring five goals and leading her team to a 12-0 victory. The U.S. went on to win the FIFA Women’s World Cup that year. In 2006, Brandi was inducted into the AYSO Hall of Fame.

These days, Brandi stays very close to her favorite sport and her family. Her youngest son Jaden now plays soccer, and she knows the importance of good nutrition on and off the field. Brandi has partnered with Dole to help bring nutritional and game-day tips to youth soccer parents all over the country. Her first “Game Day Great Tip” was to always have a convenient, healthy snack available. Check out a video of her here.
