AYSO Alums Already Making their Marks at the Olympics

Rio’s opening ceremony for the Olympic Games was a lively and inspiring kick off to the next 16 days of competition, but the celebrations didn’t stop there. Already, U.S. athletes are making their mark on the Games—AYSO alums included.

20 year-old AYSO alum Nico Hernandez, a flyweight boxer from Wichita, Kan., won his three-round preliminary match against Italy’s Manual Cappai Saturday evening. He moves on to his next match Monday, August 8.

Also on Saturday evening, it was established that AYSO alum Conor Dwyer, veteran-Olympian and gold medalist for swimming, will take the top qualifying time of 3:43:42 into the 400m freestyle final for next Saturday’s race.

And finally, the U.S. Women’s National team (USWNT) saw two wins this past week. They defeated New Zealand 2-0 on Wednesday with goals from Carli Lloyd and AYSO alum, Alex Morgan. While on Saturday, with an assist from Tobin Heath, Carli Lloyd scored again, beating France 1-0. The USWNT will play again on Tuesday, August 9 against Colombia where other AYSO alums—Christen Press, Alyssa Naeher, Whitney Engen and Julie Johnston will be seen helping to bring the gold one step closer to home.

We’re looking forward to seeing what our other 39 AYSO alums will achieve in the coming two weeks!
