Team Frosted Flakes - an AYSO U-8 girls squad from Region 31 in Diamond Bar, Calif., won a "Grrr-reat" prize from Kellogg's "Share What You Love" contest and earned a visit from Tony the Tiger and future baseball Hall of Famer Tino Martinez on Monday, Jan. 24.
Tony the Tiger and Tino hosted a VIP workout session for the girls in the Kellogg Gymnasium at Cal Poly Pomona University, where the team participated in dribbling and shooting drills. Tino also spoke to the girls about the importance of staying active - which was followed by a team picture with cereal celebrity, Tony the Tiger.
Inspired by their orange and blue jerseys, the team came up with the name Frosted Flakes and decked out their AYSO banner with images of Tony the Tiger - before they had any knowledge of the contest. A few weeks later, team parent John Craine came across an ad for the contest on Facebook. Realizing that his daughter's team was a perfect example of "Showing Your Love for Frosted Flakes," the team entered into the nationwide contest.
Team Frosted Flakes - coached by Enrico Senatore - sent in an essay and photo submission, which earned the team a spot in the contest's top five submissions in the country. Kellogg then opened up the voting to the public and AYSO team Frosted Flakes won by a landslide.
Former Yankee first baseman Tino Martinez was happy to share this moment with the AYSO girls, "AYSO is so important because it teaches kids to play together in a team and helps kids stay active," he explained. "My niece plays in AYSO and I think it's great!" Diamond Bar Mayor Steve Tye also attended the event, and was proud of team Frosted Flakes' success. "It's really wonderful that they are bringing this positive news to the community," he shared.
