Focus Brought To AYSO Volunteer Training
In an effort to focus greater attention on the importance of training, the AYSO National Board of Directors, at their Jan. 22, 2010 meeting, unanimously passed amendments to the AYSO National Rules & Regulations.
The NBOD action served to amend the duties and responsibilities of all volunteers to “comply with AYSO Rules & Regulations and AYSO policies, including those related to registration, certification and training.” Added to the duties of coaches for all teams was: “be trained consistent with the AYSO National Coaching Program standards for the age/skill level of the team he/she will coach.” Reference was also added regarding the importance of maintaining proper identification of all AYSO players and volunteers.
Recognizing the significance of this decision, the NBOD has directed that the changes be implemented over several years, beginning with the U-6 division in the 2010 membership year, which begins on August 1, 2010. To help coaches meet the new requirement, the National Coaching Commission and AYSO National Coach John Ouellette are producing an online version of the U-6 Coach training course that will be available beginning in March. Completion of the online U-6 Coach Course will provide the certification required under the new changes.
The NBOD also asked staff at the AYSO National Support & Training Center to develop for the Board’s future consideration, a plan for producing, distributing and using forms of identification for AYSO players and volunteers that would improve the organization’s ability to verify registration status, insurance coverage and training qualifications.
