The Importance of the Supervision Ratio
The story of a Boy Scout camp director recently arrested on computer child pornography charges highlights the importance of enforcing the AYSO Supervision Ratio. A thirty-nine year old Michigan man who served as both a Boy Scout camp director and a YMCA employee was recently arraigned on federal child pornography charges. As an employee of both of these well-respected programs, the suspect had undergone a criminal background check, which was clear.
What provides a small amount of comfort to the parents, employees and volunteers involved in these programs is that by virtue of their respective supervision policies, the suspect was never left alone with a child. AYSO also has a strict supervision policy. The AYSO Supervision Ratio calls for at least two adults to be present where there are between one and eight children present, and for an additional adult to supervise each additional eight players. Not only does strict adherence to this policy protect our children, but it also provides protection to our volunteers, who should never find themselves having to refute accusations of inappropriate behavior while they were alone with a player.
