First NBOD Meeting Opens New Era
The first meeting of AYSO’s first woman National President convened Monday, May 30 at 9:30 a.m. EDT in Traverse City, Mich., as Paula Berriz began her term of office with welcome remarks and National Board of Director (NBOD) appointments.
The meeting also included new NBOD members Brendan Cravalho, former Section 7 Director and Rick Russell of the AYSO National Management Advisory Commission, who were both elected by the executive membership during the Sunday election. They fill the two seats of the 11-member board that became open as National President Mike Wade and NBOD member Mark Linsky chose not to run for reelection at the end of their terms.
In first business, President Berriz appointed three vice presidents in a move that gave her time to consider how she will structure NBOD liaisons to AYSO Sections in her administration. Mike Fults, Dave Oram and Mark Stewart were all appointed vice presidents and will serve an interim liaison role to the AYSO Sections. Mark Stewart will liaise with Sections 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5; Mike Fults with Sections 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10; and Dave Oram with Sections 11, 12, 13, 14 and 99. Berriz said she is evaluating what structure may work best going forward and did not want to create any confusion with many interim appointments that may need to be changed at a later time.
In other appointments, she announced Jeff Stern will continue as NBOD Treasurer and Bill Hummell will now serve as Secretary.
Berriz also announced Tom Lebens of the National Legal Commission as its new chair.
In other business, the new president took comments and questions from the floor, encouraging the Section Directors, Commission chairs, National Office staff and other members of the audience to participate. She explained that open communication was a critical aspect of the new administration and she would be seeking practical ways to create dialog at all levels of AYSO.
The meeting was brief as is the tradition of the final official gathering of the AYSO National Annual General Meeting weekend. The next meeting of the NBOD will be July 22-24 at the AYSO National Office in Torrance, Calif.
