Over $18,500 in Grants Made to AYSO Players Nationwide
The Hugo Bustamante AYSO Playership Fund awarded over $18,500 to more than 300 AYSO players for this fall season thanks to donations from dozens of Regions, individuals and others. This was the first grant cycle for the new Playership Fund.
The grants, which generally cover 80 percent of a player’s registration fee, were made nationwide to players from Sections 1, 2, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 – literally spanning Florida to California. The grants went to kids who may not otherwise have been able to afford to play this season.
The Bustamante Fund does year-round fundraising
, but “closes” the fund on Jan. 31 each year to determine the amount available for grants for the coming year. Over 700 applications were received this year, and AYSO would like to thank all the parents and volunteers who made great suggestions on how to improve the process for next year.
As this was the first year of grant making, it was also a learning process. A number of changes will be instituted next year to make the grant application process more streamlined both for families and Regions. Thanks to all the parents and volunteers who made great suggestions on how to improve the process!
A special thank you also to the AYSO National Endowment Commission which oversees the Bustamante grants process. The commission members are Dave Oram (NBOD), Mark Stewart (NBOD), Cherie Tucker (volunteer) and Shari Shaffer (Section 13 Director) for their hard work. The next grant cycle begins in Feb. 1, 2012. Please check for grant application details on AYSO.org after that date.
