Should I Give End-of-Season Trophies?
Here Are Some Ideas From Around AYSO
With the end of the AYSO season almost here, we have received many questions about AYSO's rules about giving trophies to players. AYSO has no official rule on trophies, and allows Regions to decide whether or not to give trophies to participants. To help you, here are some suggestions from Regions around the country.
We give our U-5 through U-8 teams participation trophies. First through third place (or second place depending on the number of teams) receive trophies for our older age groups, U-12 through U-14. We have 22 teams in our boys U-10 division, so we divided the teams into three different conferences, with each conference awarding trophies to first through third place. This way more kids get trophies. Also, in U-10 we give participation medals to those not getting trophies - it's sort of a transition year for them. (Leslie Gilder, 10/E/42)
We hand out medals for our first, second and third place teams for the season in U-10 and up. Everyone else in our Region receives participation pins. Any team that receives 10 Referee Points is invited to play in our post season tournament, which is round-robin style. The first through fourth place teams in the tournament receive trophies. (Audrey Castreje, 11/Q/1398)
Our Region orders trophies for the end of the year playoffs. At the end of the season, we have a tournament week, which every team gets to participate in. It's a double-elimination round-robin set of games. First and second place receive trophies, all the other teams get participant trophies. The trophy company we work with prepares all the engraved name plates but does not affix them to the trophies. As the teams are eliminated, we start affixing the engraved name plates to the participant trophies, leaving only the first and second place trophies left to personalize after the final match. (Carla Bahn, 14/J/864)
In the past, we've given trophies to every player. We've given first and second place trophies to U-10 through U-14, with the rest, including VIP, getting participation trophies. We also give our sportsmanship medals in U-8 through U-14. This year we are making some changes. The U-16 and U-19 divisions will get medals. All of our trophies this year will be smaller, and we are going to emphasize the sportsmanship award. (Mike Hoyer, 1/D/17)
For our tournaments, we do a mix of medals and small trophies. The only big trophies are for the best sportsman and woman of the day, which are chosen by the referees, coach administrator and assistant, who watch all the games. It sends a very clear message about our philosophies. (Mary Fish, National Management Advisory Commission Member)
